Fall is, without a doubt, my favourite time of the year. I love the crisp air, that fresh start vibe, pumpkin flavoured anything and everything and, of course, the fashion. But, most of all, I love Halloween. This year, my girlfriends and I will be dressing up as The Craft and I am so excited to execute this look. I have been beyond obsessed with witches since I was a kid. My brother and I used to watch old reruns of Bewitched over and over. Every October, I have to watch Hocus Pocus at least once. I read Wicked twice and can pretty much recite the musical. I secretly hoped I would wake up levitating on my sixteenth birthday, just like Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I’m pretty sure my Hogwarts letter got lost in the mail and I’ve spent an inordinate (read: embarrassing) amount of time trying to move objects with my mind.
As I’ve gotten older, I’m not going to lie to you, my witch obsession hasn’t diminished in the slightest. If anything, it’s grown. Tarot cards play a disconcertingly large role in my major life decisions. My grandma taught me the best way to get rid of a little bad energy is to get that sage burning and she has an extraordinary knowledge of natural remedies that I make use of constantly. I strongly believe I can draw energy and power from being in nature, and, my witch obsession has definitely informed my fashion sense.
My clothes have always been one tool I can use to help me face whatever I have on my plate for the day. So, I dress based on what I need to channel to get me through. When I need to get grounded and rooted or I am struggling to battle my anxiety, I channel my 'Stevie-Knicks-Boho-Witch' in a kimono, stacked jewelry and my favourite worn-in booties. When I’m dealing with a fuckboy, a bull shit work scenario or I’m feeling like I need a confidence boost, I dress in, what I like to call, my 'Modern-Day-(maybe sometimes uses her power to curse her exes)-Witch' look; all black everything, leather, ripped denim and a dark lip.
Why do I draw so much fashion inspiration from witches? Because, the cool thing about witches is that they are synonymous with female power. Really, witches were just women who were persecuted for their attempts to draw power through nature and sisterhood during a time when men were terrified of the thought of empowered women who defied social norms and thought outside the box. Just kidding, I’m pretty sure most men are still pretty terrified of those kinds of women. Just ask Beyoncé, who channeled some seriously witchy vibes this year in her New Orleans-centric music video for her female power anthem, Formation.
Even The Queen knows it, witches are just cool as fuck. They are the OG #girlbosses and they will take you down if you mess with them. Honestly, I can’t think of a better fashion icon for women everywhere.
So, long story short, I’ll just be over here trying to manifest my powers … If you find my Hogwarts letter, let me know ok?
Have a great day my pretties ;)
